The Oxford English Dictionary defines an introduction as, A preliminary explanation prefixed to or included in a book or other writing; the part of a book which leads up to the subject treated, or explains the authors design or purpose. This guide has been created to assist my graduate students in thinking through the many aspects of crafting, implementing and defending a thesis or dissertation.
Probably the most disorganized defense I've attended is the one where the dissertation director began the meeting by saying, "You've all read the dissertation. With this in mind, enjoy the guide. Don't assume that readers are familiar with the geography or the stratigraphy of your field area. In some theses, particularly multi-disciplinary or developmental ones, there may be more than one such chapter. You are writing for researchers in the general area, but not all of them need be specialists in your particular topic. Dissertation writing should be clear and unambiguous. It should begin with a statement of the problem/background information (typically Chapter I of the dissertation then move on to a review of the literature (Chapter 2 and conclude with a defining of the research methodology (Chapter 3). We are looking for a well-reasoned line of argument, from your initial question, compilation of relevant evidence, setting data in a general/universal context, and finally making a judgment based on your analysis. Include a caption for each figure and table, citing how idioms for persuasive essay it was constructed (reference citations, data sources, etc.) and highlighting the key findings (think skimming).
